There are a couple of other species of birds
Quail.
We usually have quail because we try to take in ex-laying or breeding birds to give them a second chance. They are fantastic little birds, who can become very tame. At the moment we have 2 ex breeding girls, who were almost bald on arrival, called Baby and Sporty.
Quail only live to about 2-3 years, but are culled at the age of 1 usually because they stop laying as many eggs. We did have a very tame and cheeky boy called Charlie-quail who lived to be about 6.
We also asked to take in some quail who had been hatched from eggs, but they owner decided quail wasn't for them, it turned out to be mainly boys. We took them and they are taming down nicely. They are Homer, Chestnut ( both boys) and Princess.
In June 2010, we got some ex-laying females, we then took in 2 more boy quail who were not settling in their home because they were needing some female company.
They are now in groups of 5 four girls to one boy and seem to be very happy, if a bit flighty.
I have to add that Princess is the most intelligent amongst them. I have to put all of them to bed, except Princess, she toddles in herself.
Celestial parrotlets.
We also have a pair of celestial parrotlets, these are beautiful little birds who are very aggressive towards other birds, so cannot be kept in an aviary. They were rescued by a lady who looked after them for a couple of years, however ill health meant she had to rehome all her birds, and nobody wanted the parrotlets, or bluebirds, as they are known here. They were facing having to be PTS, so we took them. They are now in a big indoor avairy and fascinating little characters who alway make us smile, even when they are being so noisy we can't hear the telly. They arrived in 2009 aged 2, and are called Yogi and Zelda.
Available for sponsorship.
Kakarikis.
We too in 2 kakarikis in June 2010, they came from the same owner as the celestial parrotlets and were the last of her birds to be rehomed. They are 2 girls called Fiona and Mango (Mango was called Stanley, but I just couldn't get my head round a girl having a boy's name). Mango has a damaged beak and eye but cope very well with her disability. Fiona is a cheeky girl, whereas Mango is a bit quieter. hey are living outside with some quail to keep them company.
