PIGS

Gigi,

was a 2007 Christmas surprise, and when we took her home on the 24th of December she was only about 2 weeks old. She had been found running around on a road by some people who worked at BA stores, where we buy our animal food. They took her to the shop and we took her home. She had badly damaged eyes a we thought she may even have lost one. It looked like she had fallen off a lorry, being transported for weaning. She was quite thin and cold, she was fed, intially on a universal milk mix and thrived, although she took weeks to wean. We finally got her to eat bananas and bread, but she wouldn't look at pig mix. She lived it the house for 3 weeks. Sleeping in a dog crate and running round the bedroom when we were in. However she got too big and had to finally move outside, into the small hay shed.

Scarlet,

became Gigi's new friend. She is, we think, a gloucestershire old spot cross tamworth, and is about the same age as Gigi. She was destined to be meat, but she came home instead and has turned into a very loving pig. She will roll over onto her side and shut her eyes with bliss if you rub her tummy.

The Findhorn 4- Olive, Wilbur, Terry and Patsy.

We were contacted about these pigs in Nov 2010, they were at an organic far which was being closed and these pigs had nowhere to go- they were pets who ate the excess veg and did a bit of rotovating. No other rescues could take them and it was looking like they would be PTS. Olive is mum and the other 3 are her babies ( I say babies, they are 6 years old) Wilbur is castrated and lives happily with the 3 girls. We had a big problem gettingthem to us, because nobody really wanted to transport them and there is a special license needed if they travel more than 30 miles! However, after a weekend of cobbling together a shelter and making a paddock with electric fencing, they arrived an settled in. Their first winter was a very hard one with snow and frost for the first 3 months of their time with us, but they coped and we hope to make some better housing from them in the near future.
