Chickens
We have a number of chickens, the first few being bought for eggs. We got them in 2002. Of the ones we bought we still have-
Jemima, a lavender auracana who lays blue eggs.
Henrietta, a speckled sussex, who lays buff eggs.
Tallulah, a welsummer, who lays dark, brown eggs. And,
We also took in some hens who came from some people who were moving away. The hens couldn't go, and nobody wanted elderly hens, so they came here- their ages ranged from 2 - 8, when the arrived in 2007.
They are
Babs, Winnie and Betty, all silkie hens,
Minny,
Freckles,
Splash,
Robin,
Lacey,
Scruffy
and Garcon, who lives with Minny, Freckles, Babs, Winnie, Betty and Scruffy.
Garcon arrived in 2009 aged 1 year, he was from someone who had bred too many males and had to rehome or cull them.
We also have Edward, arrived in 2010 aged 4 months, he is a pekin cockerel. He was bought by someone as a girl, she turned out to be a she and had to be rehomed. Edward lives with 2 pekin hens, the girls came with a hen house we bought in 2009 aged 2! They are called Buffy and Silvie.
Recently we took home Truffles from the New Arc as a consort for Robin, Lacey, Splash, Jemima, Henrietta and Tallulah. He is an old silkie cockerel who will hopefully enjoy his harem of elderly girls.
In June 2010, we took 12 ex-commercial free range hens for the New Arc who managed to save 250 from disposal.
